Thursday@ the Museum – Part 1, Fieldtrip

24 06 2010

So today, given the G20 BS happening and most people are out of the office, i told the students i planned a “mini fieldtrip” for them today. I then qualified that the trip was in the museum, but it would be something fun.

SO I called my good friend, colleague and herp technican Amy, to show them around the “live room” in her area. They got to hold a coral snake, a blue tongued skink, a bearded dragon, feed a meal worm to some reptiles and held a boa constrictor.

After our tour we came downstairs to wash our hands (ick) and then i got out all the ingredients and a 1994 article from Scientific American on Chemistry in the Kitchen. I grab a dewer of liquid nitrogen and we proceeded to make the best ice cream in the world.
I had all the student wear safety googles.. safety first, and we made a batch of vanilla ice cream with peanut butter M & Ms in it.

For me, being sugar challenged, i followed up with an eggface pistachio protein ice cream, which some of the students said they preferred over the sugar one. Gotta love them !

Shelly’s Pistachio Protein Ice Cream

2 Tablespoons Sugar Free Pistachio Pudding Mix
1 cup Vanilla Soy Milk (or Regular Milk)
2 scoops Vanilla Protein Powder

Mix in a metal bowl with a metal spoon. Add liquid nitrogen and stir like mad, as everything is instantly frozen. Wait for all the vapour to dissipate and then consume.

I had half the batch, which has 224 calories, 3 grams of fat, 19 carbs, and 27 grams of protein

So I am filling time in my office as Part 2 of my Thursday starts on 15 minutes.. black tie affair with the Cdn. tenors and a sneak peak at Terracotta Warriors… yeah !
